A very bad inheritance in Bangkok: Pata "zoo"; do NOT visit this "zoo"!
Pata “zoo” (
Pata Zoo Co. Ltd.) is a “department” of
Pata shopping mall and is only there to draw more clients to the mall; when a Thai family visits the “zoo” they go down afterwards and are buying and, at least, eating something. As the mall is mainly for locals who know nothing about the modern zoo-standards and for who is a zoo a zoo and that means animals behind bars: “they are treated, fed and cared for well so what’s the problem”? Foreigners are visiting this mall rarely so the objections are not that big unfortunately.
The naked fact at the moment is that everybody who rejects this “zoo” has been blocked by weak and insufficient Thai laws.
We need help from abroad because, for example, the Thai Tourist Board is very conscious to loose tourism. The more worldwide complaints are coming to the authorities the better as I said before we, in Thailand, has been blocked by the arrogance of the management and the weak laws.
I hope you, family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and newspapers are willing and able to do something. Also the international animal-protection organizations are important: their voice can be strong!
Pata is mentioning in their very informative "site" that they are member of
SEAZA but that is a lie, they are NOT as I were informed by this organization!
Bangkok's Pata Zoo came under fire on Tuesday for operating a zoo inside a shopping mall despite the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department's assertion that the caged animals were being treated well.
The Thai Animal Guardians Association (TAGA) filed a complaint with the zoo and claimed its location was inappropriate.
TAGA chairman Roger Lohanan said the authorities found nothing wrong when they inspected the zoo on Monday because their criteria was based on the legal fact that the gorilla rightfully belongs to the zoo.
But he said the matter at hand had more to do with the ethics of opening a zoo at a shopping mall.
The zoo's location was not appropriate and could not provide the animals with sufficient recreational space, he said.

A visit to Pata “zoo” one year later: as there’s a stalemate and the owner has all play-trumps in hand as the Thai laws seems to be insufficient to close down the whole disconsolate collection of animals they are still suffering in their poor and disgraceful “accommodations”.
Any renewing/renovation and/or maintenance cannot be established which is giving the premises more and more a poor looking and depressing appearance.
Some terrariums and cages are empty and several snakes are exposed as plastic.
The penguin is still showing himself alone since all his colleagues died a bit more than one year ago.
A pity!
I just found out that a link with critical text in the Bangkok Post of October 1977 concerning Pata “zoo” and which I placed in the set, isn’t accessible anymore; by clicking on it one has been diverted to "deqp.go.th", which seems to be a Thai governmental site, resulting in a “Problem loading page”. Also a video in
http://www.veoh.com isn’t accessible anymore showing the text “Veoh is no longer available in THAILAND. If you are not in THAILAND or think you have received this message in error, please go to veoh.com and report the issue”.
